Ever had that feeling that someone is watching you? My partner @jenniferhayesig was on assignment in Cuba's Gardens of the Queen National Park photographing jellyfish in the mangroves when a curious American crocodile swam past to investigate who was working in its back yard. Jennifer sensed her visitor just as I made a loud noise through my regulator to get her attention. She turned to greet her visitor and made a series of portraits before the crocodile continued lazily on its way downstream. Crocodiles are called the engineers of the mangroves because their movements open new and maintain new channels in the dense mangrove roots. Cuba's Gardens of the Queen Marine Preserve is an isolated time capsule in the Caribbean where reef and mangrove systems look similar to the day Columbus discovered them and named them for his Queen.
