This photo of a ‘Gigantic Irish Deer’ dates from the 1850s when the Museum was home to a significant collection of natural history objects. This space was known as the ‘Reptile Gallery’ when this photo was taken. The natural history collections were very popular with the public, but Sir Anthony Panizzi, the Director of the Museum until 1866, hoped that moving these collections elsewhere would get rid of the ‘improperly’ behaved children who visited these galleries! Eventually in the 1880s a new museum was built in Kensington, which has since become the @natural_history_museum. Unlike in the 19th century, we now welcome visitors of all ages and both museums are very popular with families! ???
