This painting by L W Collman shows his proposed scheme for the Museum’s Front Entrance Hall in the mid-19th century. The highly detailed decoration is inspired by classical motifs and shapes, in keeping with the Museum’s neo-classical architecture. This colourful design was approved and painted in 1847 and was praised for its modernity. The view looks strikingly similar today, albeit with fewer top-hats and bonnets, as the space was restored to this design scheme in 1999-2000 while the Great Court was being built. Collman’s painting was used as a guide for the redecoration that happened during this time.
