Photo by @jenniferhayesig A harp seal pup seeks shelter from the relentless wind behind a pyramid of ice in Canada's Gulf of St Lawrence. Harp seals are born on the ice in late February and nursed for 12-15 days before their mother abandons them. Natural mortality is high in normal ice conditions and has been extremely high (+90%) in recent years reflecting elevated temperatures and formation of weak ice cover. The thin ice cover is enough to entice the female to birth her pup upon but is not thick enough to remain intact during the big storms that roll across the gulf destroying the ice before the pups are ready to survive on their own. These amazing creatures have become my spirit animal and the Face of Climate Change for us. We look return to the gulf each year conditions allow to document their life in the ice.
