We're back home and about to have dinner with our children. I'm just now posting about our experiences at the inauguration and in D.C. because my feelings have been big and all over the place. My social media feed is full of people excited and hopeful about what's to come and people angry and afraid. I hope your friends with people on both sides as well. Loving our neighbor doesn't come with the qualifier of only those you agree with. Actually Jesus goes much further..."You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5 (go read the whole thing, beautiful words of Jesus) Also, my other over-riding thought while in our nations capital was how thankful I am to be an American. Not sure why God saw fit to place me here, but I'm grateful. I've had the opportunity to travel the world to countries where women are married off as teenagers, where rape is common, where there is very little chance for education for girls or a way to provide for themselves, where there is no access to simple healthcare and medicine that is so common here and could easily save lives and save children from becoming orphans, where mamas love their babies but can't afford to keep them, where the average income is less than $1 a day. May we strive to make our country better, but never take for granted the great blessing we have and the freedoms we enjoy by simply being Americans. And last but most importantly, God forgive us for the ways we have forgotten you. May we have more of the fruits of your Spirit in this place: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. More of that God, please more if that.
