I’m excited to start my takeover with a call out to @cooperhewitt’s founding collectors, Sarah and Eleanor Hewitt. Granddaughters of industrialist Peter Cooper, the sisters amassed an extraordinary collection of design and decorative arts—everything from fifth-century Greek vessels to French master drawings to Meissen porcelain—and established a museum within Cooper Union (an art, architecture, and engineering school in New York) in 1897.
One of my favorite spots in the museum is this second-floor gallery filled with a selection of 18th- and 19th-century birdcages the sisters acquired on their European adventures.
