Just a few years ago, South Sudan accomplished what seemed the impossible: independence. On July 9, 2011, our staff photographer Tyler Hicks captured this scene as citizens gathered in Juba, the capital, to watch the signing of the constitution. Global powers, including the United States, rallied to South Sudan’s side. Of all the rebel armies fighting for freedom in Africa, the South Sudanese actually won. But today, tens of thousands of civilians are dead, countless children are on the verge of starvation, millions of dollars have been stolen by officials, oil wells have been blown up, food aid has been hijacked and as many as 70% of women living in camps have been raped. So now, a radical question has emerged: Should #SouthSudan lose its independence? Visit the link in our profile to read @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter Jeffrey Gettleman’s report on how international frustrations have given momentum to the radical idea that outside powers should take over until things calm down.
