The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has proposed a quota of 800 lion skeletons for export following on from the decision made at CITES COP17 to set a lion bone quota sourced from captive populations. This was set even before a meeting was held last week between stakeholders organized by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), which is worrying to say the least. We've seen an increase in the demand for lion bone since the CITES decision was made to phase out tiger farming in 2007 due to the detrimental impact it was shown to have on wild tiger populations. Now ask yourself the question. Why should it be any different for lion? This can only be bad for lions both wild and captive. Please share widely.
