Photo by @michaelmelford // Machu Picchu, 8,000 feet above sea level, this 15th century Inca citadel believed to be built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachachiti around 1450 and abandoned a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911 as it was covered by the jungle growth. The central buildings use the classical Inca architectural style of polished dry-stone walls of regular shape. The Incas were masters of this technique, called ashlar, in which blocks of stone are cut to fit together tightly without mortar. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
