A river of liquid slag, the glass-like by-product left over after a desired metal has been removed from its raw ore, illuminates the Arctic sky in Norilsk, Russia. Norilsk Nickel, founded in 1993 is the world’s leading producer of nickel and palladium. The spectacular sight belies the human and environmental effects of industrial pollution in this Siberian city that is often ranked amongst the world’s most polluted places. Since October 2001, Norilsk is a so-called "closed city” meaning that, for strategic reasons, it has been declared closed to foreigners by an order of the Russian government. The photograph was taken a few months prior to this.
