Ora Cave, Papua New Guinea
Last week I posted a "visual note" to myself that I had made in Ora Cave. (check @salvarezphoto for the picture) It was the start of a photographic idea, and expression. Here is the final image that I came up with. I liked the figure on the left had side rock, the way she stood out against the light coming in from the entrance, but I wanted an image with more depth, more layering and one that included the power of the river. 10 days later I went back into the cave with a team to make this image. We backed off down passage, crossed the raging Ora River and made this photo happen. These pictures take a lot of coordination and cooperation. It is so loud inside the cave that communication is all but impossible. We had to "talk" to each other with a code of predetermined whistle blasts. Recently a friend asked me why I explore. Its a good question and the real answer is so that I can make and share images and experiences like this.
