On Jan. 27, 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending the State Department's Refugee Assistance Program and visa entry from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and Libya for three to six months, saying they are "detrimental to the interests of the United States." Yet counterterrorism experts say that the policy could backfire by providing more fodder for propaganda and recruiting by jihadist groups that aim to demonize the United States.
