Some of our most cherished masterpieces were made by artists who immigrated to the United States. Willem #deKooning was born in 1904 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 1926 he arrived to Newport News, Virginia, as a stowaway on a freight ship. #LouiseNevelson was born near what is today Kiev, Ukraine, in 1899 and emigrated to the US at the age of 5 with her family. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1848. His family emigrated to New York when he was six months old. Mark #Rothko was born in Dvinsk, Russia (today Daugavpils, Latvia). His family came to the US when he was 10 years old and settled in Portland, Oregon. #JosefAlbers and his wife, artist #AnniAlbers, emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1933 after the Bauhaus school closed under Nazi pressure. #EvaHesse was born in 1936 in Hamburg, Germany. Her family emigrated to New York City in 1939.
