Those of us who are white, male, and privileged in other ways need to distance ourself from the idea that bad *intentions* are the main things standing in the way of equality. This applies to liberals and democrats as well as those on the right. We can have the best intentions, but if the affect of our actions or inactions is to perpetuate or condone systemic injustice though what we do or our silence, it ultimately doesn't matter what our intentions are. It only matters to ourselves, as it gives us some assurance that we aren't "one of the bad ones." Let the question be, "how can I BETTER stand with those that aren't granted the privileges that I am?". Let's acknowledge that failures to do this don't automatically make us bad people, but that if we rest on the goodness of our intentions, we are refusing to improve ourselves and the systems of the society that we live in for those who are most marginalized. And then, what do our intentions matter if we are still left with a wake institutionalized oppression?
