After falling in love with the night sky at age 12, astrophysicist and @TEDFellow Jedidah Isler worked her way up to become the first black woman to earn a Ph.D in astrophysics at Yale. Now she passionately studies the object depicted in this photo: blazars. Blazars are supermassive, hyperactive black holes that produce particle streams moving 99.99% of the speed of light -- and they’re pointed directly at Earth. There are still many unanswered questions about these mysterious objects, but Jedidah’s research is taking her closer and closer to the next incredible celestial discovery. “Who knew that chasing after the universe would ground me so deeply to my mission here on Earth?” she says. “Then again, when do we ever know where love's first flutter will truly take us?” In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re highlighting some of our favorite #TEDTalks from African American speakers.
