At KURA CHIKA YOSHIDA Omotesando we carry photo books selected by "POST" which is a new book shop that periodically replaces all of their books time to time.
Among our selection, today we would like to introduce "Catalogue" by Mark Newson - a product designer from Australia.
He is a designer who usually makes products of mass production, however this book was released at the timing of this exhibition held at the Gagosian Gallery, NY including his products as art pieces shown there.
He chooses mass produced items such as chairs, lamps, and knives yet uses coatings and materials that are impossible to use on mass production and also applies difficult shapes as well, which sublimates the items to an art piece. What is in between a product and an art piece? He puts a query against its border line.

クラチカ ヨシダ 表参道では、定期的に扱っている本が全て入れ替わる新しいブックショップ“POST”がセレクトした写真集を取り扱っています。
本日はその中からオーストラリアのプロダクトデザイナー、マーク・ニューソンの「Catalogue」をご紹介いたします。
普段は量産されるプロダクトを手がける彼が制作した、オブジェとしてのプロダクト群の展覧会がニューヨークのガゴシアンギャラリーで開催されたのに合わせて発行された書籍です。
椅子やランプ、ナイフなど、通常は量産される物をモチーフにしながら、量産では不可能な表面の仕上げや量産自体が難しいフォルムや素材が使われることで、オブジェと呼ぶにふさわしい作品に昇華されています。プロダクトとアートピースを隔てるものは何なのか、その境界線に疑問符を投げかける作品群です。
