Happy birthday, Constantin #Brancusi. Did you know that his iconic sculpture, “Bird in Space,” a bronze version of which is on view @フィラデルフィア美術館, is one of the most famous artworks in legal history? In 1926, Brancusi shipped this sculpture from Paris to NYC but when US customs inspected the sculpture, an agent unwittingly labeled his artwork as a “household good,” meaning that the shipment was not exempt from import taxes. Brancusi ended up launching a legal court case against the United States government to defend his artwork, which set an important legal precedent for all future international shipments of art. #TIL #bornonthisday
