This is an installation view of Kan Xuan’s multi-media work “Kū Lüè Er.” The artist traveled thousands of miles to document remnants of ancient settlements with her cell phone camera along the border of northwest China. This work critically responds to the keywords provided by me to frame the exhibition, such as “territory,” “border,” and “boundaries.” The artistic interpretations of these keywords provide insight into a world with increasing divisions along racial, religious, and cultural lines. How do we understand history? For Kan Xuan, history “is not something simply about the past or something to be studied academically.
