Mes Aynak (Pashto: ‫مس عينک‬‎, meaning "little source of copper") is a significant archaeological site 40km (25 mi) southeast of Kabul, Afghanistan. The site contains the country's largest copper deposit, as well as the remains of an ancient settlement with over 400 Buddhist statues, stupas and a monastery complex. In 2007 a lease was sold to a Chinese state-owned mining company to exploit the copper reserves beneath the site.
Site 003: Kafiriat Tepe Monastery (which translates as 'Hill of the Unbelievers.') An otherwise beautifully preserved seated figure of Buddha - the head is lost and thieves have burrowed into the chest searching for treasure.
