On this day (12th March) in 1962, the USA launched it's first Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). During the Cold War, both the US and the Soviet Union developed nuclear-capable ICBMs, that were capable of reaching any target in each other’s territory. The dawn of the era of Mutually Assured Destruction... Here photographed, a preserved Titan II launch complex in use until 1980. The red box, with dual key access, contained the launch codes. Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

Titan II was originally designed and used as an ICBM, but was later used as a space launch vehicle (SLV) to carry payloads for the US Air Force, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The modified Titan II SLVs were launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California until 2003.
