"The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin" opens tomorrow, March 17, at the Jewish Museum, New York.
The German Jewish writer Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) began "The Arcades Project" in 1927 as a short piece about Paris's nineteenth-century iron-and-glass vaulted shopping passages. This exhibition, featuring Chris Burden, Andreas Gursky, Cindy Sherman, and Taryn Simon, will combine archival material from the Benjamin archive in Berlin, architectural models, and contemporary artwork to evoke the elaborate structure of Benjamin's text.
