It’s hard not to look at Richard Michael Cawley’s experience through the lens of current events. Nearly a century ago, the gray-eyed Irishman fled poverty and war to move to the United States. At 20, he traveled to New York in a third-class cabin aboard the S.S. Andania. He’d go on to settle in Chicago, marry a teacher and find work as a streetcar driver. He’d become an American citizen, march in St. Patrick’s Day parades and visit Ireland. It’s a familiar American tale, except for this: Richard’s grandson, @mike.pence, is now the vice president of the United States. Earlier today, the #vicepresident welcomed @endakennytd, the Irish prime minister, for breakfast as part of the White House’s #StPatricksDay festivities. For the VP — who calls his grandfather “the proudest man I ever knew, and the best man I ever knew” — it’s a deeply personal celebration. Amid the tensions over immigration, @mike.pence has also said that his grandfather taught him a powerful lesson: “If you work hard, play by the rules,” he told the Latino leaders, “anybody can be anybody in America.” @pdossantos photographed #sheep grazing not far from the area Richard Cawley grew up in #Ireland.
