The photographer Joseph Rodriguez (@rollie6x6) arrived in Los Angeles immediately after the 1992 Rodney King riots. Not long after, he began documenting the lives of gang members, starting in South Central Los Angeles and eventually arriving in Boyle Heights, a majority Mexican-American district on the East Side. His portraits of gang members were the opposite of the images that were appearing in the news media. Yes, there were guns and tattoos, but there was also family; his photos captured relationships between mothers and fathers and children and siblings and extended relations. Decades later and with support from @economichardship, @rollie6x6 returned to #BoyleHeights to see what had become of his former subjects. He found that gang members were largely absent from the streets. Some were still languishing in prison. Others had died, victims of violence or drugs. Not everyone had disappeared, though. @rollie6x6 took this photo of a former gang member who’s now a rapper, the K.A.S., a.k.a. Lil Kasper, in June 2016.
