Annie Turnbo Malone, one of the pioneers of African American hair care, successfully founded and operated a cosmetic and hair business in the early 20th century.
With her knowledge of chemistry and herbs, she developed The Great Wonderful Hair Grower and the Poro Method to revolutionize hair care. She started selling her products door-to-door to popular acclaim.
In 1917, Malone opened the Poro College in St. Louis, the first institution devoted to the study and teaching of black cosmetology. This photo is of a diploma day at the school, from our @nmaahc.
The school had more than 75,000 trained agents worldwide, including Madam C.J. Walker, who later became a well-known businesswoman with her own line of beauty products and services.
Soon Malone was a multi-millionaire. She was committed to philanthropy and financed two full-time scholarships for students at each Historically Black College and University in the country. #HiddenHerstory #WomensHistoryMonth
