The LGBTQ community has taken a lot of hits from the United States government over the last few days, and I would be remiss if I did not take some time to mention them. For those of you who don't know, the Trump administration decided to exclude LGBTQ citizens from the 2020 United States Census, and have begun removing legal protections for LGBTQ people in the workplace. ---------------------------------------------------------- The Census is vital to determining what the government can do for the people; if all people are not accurately represented, it is almost guaranteed that not everyone will have access to the same kinds of programs and legal protections. Many federal agencies urged the Census Bureau to include sexual orientation and gender in their data, but the Trump administration got what it wanted and had all questions pertaining to sexual orientation and gender identity removed. ---------------------------------------------------------- In addition to the disappointing, bigoted, and exclusive guidelines for the 2020 Census, the Trump administration also recently rescinded one of President Obama's Executive Orders, which had provided protections to LGBTQ Americans. The protections prohibited federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. ---------------------------------------------------------- Hatred and prejudice are running rampant throughout Washington, D.C. right now, and we must fight back. Speak out against the injustices by calling, texting, emailing, and writing letters to your government officials and telling them that you will not support them in the future if they continue to support Trump's actions. DO NOT allow this behavior to be normalized by remaining silent. Complacency and indifference will get us nowhere. ---------------------------------------------------------- LGBTQ people—all minorities—are NOT second class citizens. We are Americans, and we deserve every single right and protection to which white/cisgender/heterosexual people have access. You can not erase us, and we will not hide away in shame while you attempt to strip us of our God-given rights.
