Along National Route 1 in Niger, desperation spans the horizon: tens of thousands of ragged huts made from millet stalks, scraps of fabric, torn flour bags and sheets of tarp. From the air, the huts look like scattered piles of hay. Many people have been living here for more than 2 years. They come because it’s the only safe place they can find. All of them have been chased from their villages by #BokoHaram, the Islamist militant group. “Sometimes I think they’ll come again, even here,” said Atcha Mallam, 13, who has been living by the road for 18 months and still dreams that Boko Haram fighters will find her. “I have nightmares — they’re coming to kill me, they’re coming to kill me.” A handful of aid groups help. @unicef trucks in water. @theirc hands out bags of rice, sardine tins and powdered milk. @doctorswithoutborders runs small clinics. But formal camps don’t exist. @adamfergusonphoto captured a group of women and children waiting for nutrition aid packages. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
