For people fleeing the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, the asphalt of National Route 1 in Niger offers a sense of security and calm. More than 200,000 people scattered by violence have come seeking safety in this region; tens of thousands have settled along this sleek, paved highway in a part of the country where roads are usually nothing more than skinny scratches in the sand. In parts of neighboring Nigeria, Boko Haram has suffered big losses. Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians are now going home to their villages — or what’s left of them. But along the blurry border with #Niger, #BokoHaram fighters are still raging. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists spent weeks documenting the stories of people living along this road, interviewing more than 100 residents who are clinging to its edges to survive. Possessions are sparse here, and boredom is plentiful. There are few fields to tend, and harvest season is far off. Aid groups run a handful of activity centers, but the blazing sun limits the hours of play. Visit the link in our profile to read more and to see more images by @adamfergusonphoto.
