A large southern #furseal, posturing tall and growling to assert its dominance on the beach in #Antarctica. While landing the zodiac's onto the shore this was a common occurrence and an alarming greeting from these seals as they surprisingly emerged unseen from behind a boulder or alcove. They can grow as large as 10 feet and upwards of 700 pounds! Best strategy was always to step back gently and give them their space, to which they would nearly always slink back and return to their nap. I really fell in love with these seals, they were always entertaining company and from a distance they look like bears walking along the shore. In fact, the French refer to them as the Bear Seal. They're known for sharp eye site and hearing, commonly found in packs when they hunt or are simply lounging on the beach.
