Libyan smugglers crammed roughly 150 people into this dinghy and launched them into the Mediterranean with only enough fuel to reach international waters. If the fuel leaked, those in the center would suffer chemical burns. Those straddling the sides could easily fall into the sea. Among them was a young Nigerian girl named Blessing. She was one of more than eleven thousand Nigerian women who were rescued in the Mediterranean last year. When a Médecins Sans Frontières field coördinator pulled Blessing out of the dinghy, her feet were pruning; they had been soaking for hours.
