My first American film score was for Sidney Lumet's 1965 "The Pawnbroker," & I had two months to create it & a few days to record. It was a beautiful, yet stressful time, & I am thankful to this day for my mentor, Henry Mancini, who gave me advice on the technical aspects & art of film scoring. He was one of the major innovators of jazz in Hollywood film scores & never followed the traditional rules...he always explored new areas of orchestral & lyrical music which is evident in his scores for "The Pink Panther," "Breakfast at Tiffany's"...I mean, you name it. After I finished scoring "The Pawnbroker," I waited several months to be hired for another film...A certain studio was interested in having me score, but they were extremely skeptical about hiring a black composer...so I didn't think I'd get the job. But Henry believed in me and gave me a high recommendation which helped me land the next few films. He holds a special place in my heart & even though he is no longer here with us, his legacy truly lives on...So, it absolutely made my soul smile to honor him & his beautiful wife, Ginny, over the weekend at the Mancini Tribute. I had a blast conducting "Peter Gunn" for the finale with the Mancini Institute Orchestra & John Williams on piano!! Truly special...thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who was a part of it! @julieandrews #GreggField #PattiAustin @take6official @kchenoweth @rickeyminor & everyone else!
