Our Old Masters sale on April 27th will feature a rare work attributed to the great Renaissance painter, Hugo van der Goes.

Unseen at auction since the mid-19th century, The Virgin and Child with Saints Thomas, John the Baptist, Jerome and Louis is one of the most important 15th-century Netherlandish paintings remaining in private hands.

This altarpiece has an extraordinary history and now, over five centuries since its creation, is one of the few extant examples of Renaissance painting in which the preparatory drawing is visible to the naked eye.
The work will be on view to the public at Christie’s New York, Rockefeller Center from 22-26 April.

Attributed to Hugo van der Goes (Ghent, c. 1440-1482 Rode Klooster, near Brussels), The Virgin and Child with Saints Thomas, John the Baptist, Jerome and Louis. Oil on panel. 43⅝ x 49¼ in (110.8 x 125.2 cm). Estimate: $3,000,000-5,000,000.
