Start your day with #Sunflowers ?. South African artist Irma Stern (1894-1966) is revered for the sumptuous still lifes she painted in her Cape Town studio throughout her career, and Sunflowers, from early 1942, is one her finest. Last week, we took the painting back to Irma Stern's studio in #CapeTown, and to the same easel on which it was painted exactly 75 years ago. In May 1942 she took the #painting with her on her seminal trip to Congo, where it was exhibited before returning to Cape Town. In 1944 it was purchased by Sir Ernest and Lady Oppenheimer and hung at Brenthurst before being sent to England in the 1950s. This is one of the star lots of Sotheby’s inaugural sale of Modern and Contemporary African Art taking place in #London on 16 May.
