Kingsland Landfill in Bergen County, New Jersey, has been closed for almost 3 decades. In the years since, it’s been covered, leaving behind golden brown foothills that have become a draw for hungry birds. There’s a big problem, though. “Unfortunately,” said Don Torino, the president of the Bergen County @audubonsociety, “you have a bird killer in the middle of it.” A stack at the landfill releases a flame that’s virtually invisible, except for a glassy haze. It burns continuously, sometimes reaching nearly 20 feet in the air and temperatures of almost 1,000 degrees. The flare’s purpose: to burn off the methane, a potent greenhouse gas created by the decomposing garbage left behind. Officials and environmental advocates say the flame poses a potentially lethal threat to unsuspecting birds that pass through it. Larger birds, like the red-tailed #hawk, photographed here by @vincenttullo, have been found with singed wings, unable to fly or fend for themselves. Bird-watchers believe that smaller ones are simply incinerated.
