“I have been looking at a lot of these and thinking, ‘Gosh, I should have just made a painting of that.’ But the thing is, I would have had no idea how to make it into a painting. It doesn’t translate as easily as you think. I have had many experiences where I try to turn a drawing into a painting, and somehow it doesn’t work. It’s kind of like if you were going to turn a stage play into a movie or vice versa—somehow it loses all of its air. You think all you need to do to make the movie version is more effort, bigger budget, bigger scale, and then for some reason it just won’t be the same thing.
