June Schwarcz’s groundbreaking vessels challenge what it means to be a bowl. “They simply don’t hold water," she often said.
Schwarcz defied traditions in a field dominated by men. Largely self-taught, she first learned to fuse glass to metal in the 1950s through informal workshops. Her techniques pioneered new territory, especially in her approach to building 3-D forms.
Nearly 60 of her pieces—several of which have never been displayed for the public—are in an exhibition now at our @americanartmuseum’s #RenwickGallery.
