National Park, Newfoundland. The lions mane, the largest species of jellyfish, prefers very cold water. These creatures use their long trailing tentacles
to stun and draw in small fish and other prey items. Larger individuals have tentacles that can reach 100+ feet beyond their bell.
These jellyfish are the favored prey of leather back sea turtles. It is not unusual to encounter a "bloom" of lions mane jellyfish in one area.
Photographing these toxic creatures trailing long tentacles can be tricky. Hood, gloves and a full wetsuit do not guarantee happiness . After a late afternoon dive in New Jersey I surfaced unable to speak well because
my lips had face and swollen into a red bulbous mass.
