No one person can "solve" the problems of the world. And for those of us with the most privileges, we have been socialized to think of ourself as "the chosen one" who has to do it all, even in our activism. It's part of the American myths of rugged individualism/pull yourself up by your bootstraps mythology, traditional ideas of masculinity, and capitalism. By growing up in this culture, we are taught not only that we should be able to accomplish everything on our own, but that we are *better* if we do. But the great gains in social justice have been achieved precisely because of a breaking free of this mentality in many ways. Because activists have come to believe that the world that we are trying to create is only possible when we consider ourselves a part of the whole. And in fact, is *better* than the world in which we are all trying to do it mostly for ourselves, by ourselves. And for those of us that have the most privilege, there is liberation from self-obsession (which cannot lead to happiness) in being a part of something bigger than ourselves and in fact relinquishing control over the notion that "we are the one." For me, learning about the history of activism and the struggles and feelings of helplessness that people in the past (and present) have experienced is essential to the reminder that I am not alone. That despite losses and difficulties, we *must* find ways to keep moving forwards. And that even simply in the *pursuit* of justice, we are changing ourselves, and our world for the better.
