In Northern New Hampshire, along the Ammonoosuc River, drug addicts work toward recovery in a 60-year-old cottage that’s not up to code. Friendship House, the only residential drug treatment center within 65 miles, is definitely lacking: a shower curtain currently hangs across the front desk window, a well-intentioned but feeble attempt to provide clients privacy upon intake. The facility is relying on money from the Community Development Block Grant to complete a new building by October 2018 that can meet code requirements and continue offering services. Friendship House, photographed here by @samuelhodgson, has already been awarded an initial $500,000 in CDBG funds to help construct the new building and add a detox center. However, the group needs another $500,000 to complete construction and get the building licensed. The day after they applied for the second round of funding, though, President Trump announced that he wanted to end the grant program.“This is immediately affecting us,” Kristy Letendre, the facility’s director, told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “When you are looking at someone who is struggling with substance abuse, it’s life or death for them.” Swipe left to see more of @samuelhodgson’s photos from Friendship House, and visit the link in our profile to read more about the CDBG’s reach.
