Why is it so easy to be lured towards evil whereas being good is a constant battle?

When we were animals, all the other animals fought us for the same piece of land, the same sources of food, the same fountain of life. Are we still animals?
Our brains came about because thinking and reasoning was a better way than kill or be killed. Why aren't we thinking?

What does it take for PEOPLE to realize that we do not need religion or science or any any other excuse to "don't be evil" and be good to each other. We should do it because it is just better. It is hard for an entire species to agree on this at the same time even though every single person know it in their brain and feels it in their heart.
