Besides being an important historical site, Midway is home to the largest nesting colony in the world for Laysan Albatross: nearly half a million breeding pairs. Having landed on the beach after a night at sea, these birds begin their march back to their nest sites and waiting partners. Papahanaumokuakea was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2010 because of both its natural and cultural value, yet it is among several Marine National Monuments under review by the Trump Administration to assess whether they should remain in their current form and size. I will share images all this week to encourage readers to weigh in on this process.
