Today is World Turtle Day!!! ?? Sea Turtles are one of our favorite ocean animals and one of the Earth's most ancient creatures. The seven species that can be found today have been around for 110 million years, since the time of the dinosaurs. Migrating thousands of miles, over their lifetimes often crossing entire oceans to eat, they are truly amazing creatures. Today they are facing serious dangers from marine debris. "More then 50% of all sea turtles, globally, have ingested plastic. Marine debris is everywhere. It is reported from the poles to the equator and from the surface to the seafloor. It has been documented in thousands of individual animals encompassing nearly 700 species." - Ocean Conservancy. Last year alone @oceanconservancy volunteers collected more than half a million straws and stirrers, which are eaten by sea turtles and seabirds, and have even been documented clogging the nares (think nostrils) of turtles. Join @oceanconservancy to help create a healthy future for sea turtles. They are asking Congress to make sure that programs, like NOAA’s Marine Debris Program, are fully funded so they can continue keeping trash off our coastlines.
