Lisette Johnson was shot by her husband after years of enduring verbal and psychological abuse. "From the police report that day, I learned there were 29 police cars on my block. My daughter tried to call 911, but he had taken the phone off the hook. My son was trying to flag down cars; when he finally got a car to stop, he said, 'My dad shot my mom,' and they said, 'Don’t joke about that,'" says Johnson. "My 12-year-old daughter’s statement to the police was 'I saw my daddy with a gun. . . .' He shot himself after he shot me."
