This is Chien-Chi Chang's submission to the Magnum Square Print Sale, which is inspired by the agency's co-founder Robert Capa. And at the heart of that art is patience. An honest portrait requires more than proximity. It requires trust, which takes time. This picture was taken in the Vienna Airport, in 2010, when my flight to Taipei was severely delayed. While the airline was apologetic, it was clear I would spend many hours in the lounge. As night came, I was getting to know the airport and its many faces. I decided to stick my camera to the window. Using a cable release, I opened the lens to the rhythms of the airport. I hoped that the light would not burn a hole in the film. Three hours later, I heard the boarding announcement. I released the shutter. When the film was developed, I saw that I had created a close and intimate portrait of an airport and its personality." PHOTO: Vienna International Airport.
