“This picture was made toward the end of my long-term project, ‘The Sound of Two Songs,’ a response to Poland’s first five years as a member of the European Union.
Kryspinów is a small village on the outskirts of Kraków. It boasts a beautiful freshwater lake that, not surprisingly, attracts thousands of visitors from the big city during those hot summer months. While making this picture, and others, I was struck by the refreshing attitude the Poles had to a stranger with a camera (in my case a large beast on a huge tripod). Nobody gave a damn. Were I to attempt a similar photograph in the UK, I’d surely be met with considerable animosity, or worse…

Capa’s famous dictum, ‘If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough,’ never meant much to me. I’ve consistently looked at the world from a discreet distance.
