African Penguins, Cape Peninsula, South Africa – Photo by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho – A decade ago I published a book, Penguin Planet, in which I tracked and photographed all of the world's penguin species across 4 continents and dozens of islands, large and small. Of all the places I visited, one of the most remarkable, and unexpected, was along the rocky coastline south of Cape Town, South Africa. Here, amidst a striking landscape of granite boulders, I spent a week alongside an active colony of wild African Penguins, an endangered species limited to the cold currents of that continent’s southern tip. So when I had a chance to go back recently, I was curious how things had changed for these birds, which had seemed to thrive among the hedges and gardens of suburban houses that line this shoreline. Happily, I found a situation little changed, with the exception of vastly more tourist buses — and cameraphones. I was delighted to wander once again among the boulders, keeping an eye out for the penguins that suddenly appeared without warning on their way to and from the ocean. Yet I was disappointed to hear that despite the well-protected status of this colony, the species as a whole continues to decline, losing 80% of its global population in the past 50 years. It is a reminder, once again, that wonderful places like this, where people and penguins seem to happily co-exist, can mask the real challenges animals face in the modern world. Still, time spent in the company of wild penguins can be both a tonic and an inspiration: to learn more about what you can do to help African Penguins, visit SANCCOB at http://sanccob.co.za #sanccob #africanpenguins #capetown #endangered #penguins #bouldersbeach @natgeo
