Flying squirrels? Pretty normal, though nocturnal.
Caped flying squirrels? Uncommon, indeed.
The original illustration is from the “Report of the Commissioner of Patents” for the year 1856, in a volume for agriculture. Our @silibraries added a bit of superhero finesse to the page from their collection.
It’s unidentified, but the squirrel is likely Glaucomys volans, the southern flying squirrel.
