In pitch black darkness of a Sahara Night, the home Galaxy stands above Tassili National Park in southern Algeria. On an adventure trip to locate dark sky places as part of The World at Night project (twanight.org), I explored this remote World Heritage in 2009 with my Algerian astronomer colleague and local guides in 2 off-road cars. From the nearest town Tamanrasset it took us 3 days to reach this amazing site where I love to return in future but in the right season. We were there in May when it was already 55C (130F) in mid-day and still too hot at midnight, though a happy temperature for scorpions and viper snakes! It generated a lot of adrenaline encountering a few of them at dark while I was imaging the celestial Scorpion itself (center right of the picture). Here bright planet Jupiter is at left. People of #Sahara were inspired by this stunning sky for thousands of years. Follow me @babaktafreshi for more of our planet’s wonders at night.
