When it comes to striking beauty, it’s hard to top the iridescent wings of blue morpho butterflies. Iridescence is the phenomenon of surfaces that appear to gradually change color as the angle of view or the angle of illumination changes. Some examples of iridescence in nature include bird feathers, butterfly wings and sea shells, as well as certain minerals. The blue morpho's wing color is used to communicate among butterflies, and is used in courting and mating as a display. There are 29 different species of within the morpho genus, all of which are endemic to either Mexico, Central or South America, and most of which boast shades of brilliant blue. The butterflies shown here comprise part of the Museum’s massive collection of invertebrate specimens, which staff members of the Division of Invertebrate Zoology use to study and further our understanding of the lifestyles, evolution, and biology of these magnificent creatures. #bluemorpho #morpho #amnh #butterfly #butterflies #wings #iridescence #naturalhistory #butterfliesofinstagram #butterflywings
