What will you be wearing this Fourth of July? We know which patriotic duds we'll be sporting!
This shiny Uncle Sam costume belonged to Wilburt E. Leppien. Leppien first appeared as Uncle Sam in 1956 and took part in numerous ceremonies and parades across the country, including five presidential inaugurations. His costume will be part of our new exhibition, "American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith," open now.

Introduced around the time of the War of 1812, Uncle Sam symbolized the Union during the Civil War. He was popularized in the late 1900s in political cartoons by one of the country's most well-known cartoonists, Thomas Nast. However, the 1917 recruiting poster of Uncle Sam asking YOU to join the army is perhaps the most enduring rendition of the national character.
