The arrival of ‘Kachibai,’ the south wind of the summer solstice, marks the end of the rainy season on the Yaeyama Islands. When this south wind comes, the powder-puff trees (‘Sagaribana’ in Japanese) in Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park quietly begin to bloom.
The flowers of this tree bloom only at night. Bunches of wild tufts dangling from each stalk, they look almost like fireworks.
Many clusters of powder-puff trees can be found in the northern part of Ishigaki Island. If you walk the darkened paths in the early morning, you can watch the blooms dance in the wind, their sweet scent filling the air.
Then, like descending fireworks, the blooms fall to earth as the sun rises.
